The LoO IMCA Style Modifieds made their way to The Dirt Track at Charlotte for the Season B Championship night. Chris Cox, had the points lead heading into the night by just two points but tempers would flare between Matt Pridgen and himself, ultimately costing him the championship and Jared Murphy would be crowned the Season B Champion. Brother James Murphy, cruised to an easy victory as he picked up his 20th LoO IMCA Style Modified feature win on the year.

Right from the beginning of the night, the Murphy Brothers had The Dirt Track at Charlotte figured out as they definitely had some home field advantage being NC natives. James (65) would claim the pole position with a quick time of 17.36 in qualifying with brother Jared (1) at a 17.39. Each of these drivers would go on to win their respective heat races.

At the drop of the green flag in the feature race, the race would start with Chris Cox (515) and Jared Murphy (1) in a tie with Chris starting in the 4th position and Jared (1) starting 2nd. Most of the drivers would roll the bottom from the start of the race, managing their tires so they would have plenty of tires left to duke it out and make some moves at the end of the race.

Around lap 5, Trevor Williams (57) would look to the inside of Brody Duescher (9) multiple times would the hole would close up quick, resulting in the two drivers making contact. Finally on lap 9, the contact would result in an incident when Williams (57) had to lift off the throttle and Ryan Philbrick (3) couldn’t check up quick enough and got into the rear of Williams, causing Williams to spin out, bringing out the yellow flag.

On the restart, the frustration began brewing between Matt Pridgen (14) and Chris Cox (515). Cox on the high side, Pridgen down low, Cox was not giving an inch to Pridgen as both drivers were trying to run as low in the corners as possible. Pridgen, would throw the elbows right back and they would make slight contact nearly every corner.

Lap 11, another yellow would fly as the #19 of Max Miriovsky spun out in turn two. Back to green and up at the front would still be James Murphy with a comfortable lead over brother Jared in 2nd. The battle between Pridgen and Cox would escalate as Cox would continue crowding Pridgen down on the low side. Finally, Pridgen had enough and would hang a right off of turn two and shove Cox up the track to create his own room.

On lap 12 and 13, Pridgen would get past Cox but Cox came right back to the fight but now Cox would be on the bottom. Coming off turn 4, Cox came up the track and made hard contact with Pridgen and Pridgen’s #14 machine would hit the outside wall on the front stretch. Just after, the yellow would fly again as the #52 of Joshua Stewart came up the track off the corner and slammed into the #19 of Miriovsky, causing Miriovsky to spin into the wall.

Under yellow, Matt Pridgen was voicing his displeasure with the way Chris Cox was racing him on the track and over the radio. Ready for the restart, leader James Murphy elects to take the outside lane, Jared 2nd, Cox 3rd, Pridgen 4th, and Hunsinger (33A) in 5th. Right out of the gate, Cox and Pridgen were back at it but now Pridgen is on the outside and raced Chris Cox exactly how Cox raced him when Chris was on the outside.

AJ Hunsinger could see the tempers flaring and began rolling the outside. As Hunsinger was up on the top shelf going around both angry drivers, Pridgen and Cox stacked up on the bottom causing them both to push up the track slightly, allowing the #9 of Ryan Philbrick to sneak in on the bottom making it 4 wide. Cox and Pridgen would lose speed and the two of them along with Philbick to all make contact and points leader Chris Cox would spin, bringing out the caution. Cox would fall all the way back to the 14th position.

Green flag back in the air and Hunsinger, restarting in 4th, would stay up in that middle to high line and make some ground. Brody Duescher, battled on the bottom and got around Matt Pridgen and Pridgen would lose a few more spots. 3rd place through 8th place would all be stacked up as drivers were using all 4 and 5 lanes running 3 wide every corner. Trevor Doyle (024) made his way towards the front of the field working the very top lane.

On lap 22, Christian White (07) forced his way passed Pridgen but then had a bad angle into the next corner and had to check up. When he did, Matt Pridgen just barely got into the rear bumper of the #07 machine and White went for a spin.

On the restart, Hunsinger was able to get by Jared Murphy for the 2nd position. On lap 24, Trevor Doyle gets into the back of Brody Duescher and Duescher went for a spin, bringing out our 6th caution of the night.

Leader James Murphy chose the bottom lane on the restart and got the holeshot as Hunsinger, Jared Murphy, and Derrick Darnell would fight it out 3 wide for the 2nd place.

Our 7th yellow flag would fly on lap 26 as Brody Duescher came up the track slamming into the #69 of Mitch Maynard, causing Maynard to spin similar to the incident between Stewart and Philbrick on the lap 13 caution.

On the restart, Trevor Williams (57) would come into the battle for 2nd place with Hunsinger and Darnell. Most of the drivers by now were working the top side of the track as the tire game was over and drivers were trying to position themselves as far ahead as possible with the laps winding down.

Our final yellow flag would fly on lap 28 as Trevor Doyle just barely tags the right rear of Christian White, sending White for a spin.

Green flag back out, Hunsinger and Williams would get into each other entering turn 3 causing Hunsinger to go into the wall. All drivers were able to keep going but not before Hunsinger would fall from 3rd to 5th and Williams back to 7th. This allowed Chris Cox to climb back towards the front , all the way to the 3rd position. Chris Cox, right back into the championship hunt after a remarkable effort coming from the back of the field after his spin on lap 15.

Hunsinger also battled back after he and Williams’ issue resulting in Hunsinger getting into the wall as Hunsinger moved back up to the 4th position. Derrick Darnell wasn’t giving up though as he and Hunsinger put on a helluva a show, slide job after slide job. Chris Cox, right where he needed to be as he was in 3rd place right behind the man he is battling for the points title, Jared Murphy.

Coming across the line, it was James Murphy by 2.86 seconds over Jared Murphy, Chris Cox 3rd, Hunsinger 4th, and Brody Duescher would get by Derrick Darnell in the closing laps for 5th. On the leaderboard, it looked like Chris Cox would claim the points title. But, after review of the incident points aquired, the points champion would be Jared Murphy by 3 points as Chris Cox ended up with 4x which with the LoO IMCA Style Modifieds incident points system, that 4x would deduct 4 points from Cox’s overall race points. Jared Murphy, is the 2024 LoO IMCA Style Modified Season B Champion.
