The second week of the 2025 LoO IMCA Style Modified season is in the books as last weeks winner James Murphy was battling Tyler Bickford for the race win at the Lucas Oil Motor Speedway. Bickford, has been incredibly strong to open the season but once again, he just didn’t quite have enough to beat the 2024 season champ, James Murphy.
This week, the League of Outlaws did away with qualifying which meant a random heat race line up. LoO also made the session open to the public through an unpassword-protected hosted session, allowing many new and fresh faces to be able to participate in the event. In heat one, Tyler Bickford would bring the 6 car field to the green flag. Along side him, Matt Taylor in the #15 machine. In the early laps, you could have thrown a blanket over the top 4 as Bickford, Taylor, Bryce Dickenson, and Jett Yantis were all right there together with Garret Soloman hot on their tail.
Tyler Bickford would eventually check out to a comfortable lead and leave Dickenson, Taylor, and Yantis battling hard for the runner up spot. Taylor would surge ahead a little in hopes of chasing down race leader Tyler Bickford. Dickenson and Yantis would make contact on a couple occasions during some great racing as Dickenson got into the left door of Yantis in 3 and 4. The very next corner, Yantis gave it right back and tagged Dickenson in the rear bumper ever so slightly.
Yantis, ran the low line and was able to retake the spot from Bryce Dickenson. Yantis, wanted more as he continued to run the low line and set sail for 2nd place which was occupied by Matt Taylor. Yantis, was making better pace down low than Taylor and put himself in position to throw a slider on Taylor. The slider would be successful and Yantis would take the position. On the final lap, Taylor threw a slider of his own on Yantis. Yantis, then tried cutting underneath the Taylor slider and cut down the track. When he did, Soloman was right there on the bottom and Yantis and Soloman had hard contact, sending Soloman sideways. Bickford would win heat 1, Taylor 2nd, Yantis 3rd, Dickenson 4th, and Soloman 5th.
Heat 2 had James Murphy on pole with Ty Dickenson on the outside row 1. 3rd was Matt Fletchall, 4th Jonathan Smith, 5th Landon Mcleod, and 6th place Josh Madson. Murphy, jumped out to an early lead and Fletchall made quick work of Ty Dickenson for P2. Ty Dickenson would immediately fight back but when he did, his right year and Fletchall’s left front got hooked together entering turn 1 on lap 2 and but cars would push up the track. Dickenson, would make contact with the wall with his right front damaging his right front suspension and Dickenson would take his #65 car to the pits.Murphy, would pick up the easy win with Smith fending off Smith for 2nd, Fletchall, finished 4th, Dickenson and Mcleod 5th and 6th.
Next up was heat 3. Randall Maggard would start 1st, 2nd was Tony Lewis, 3rd Brandon Greene, 4th Mason Barnes, 5th Blayden Graham, and 6th Tucker Halliday. Out of turn 1 on lap 1, Greene would take the lead early but Graham would battle heading into turn 3. Graham would complete the pass and then Halliday would overtake Greene for the 2nd spot. Graham would pick up the win, Halliday P2, and Greene in P3.
The lineup for heat 4 would be Justin Johnson 1st, Misty Necaise on his outside, Steven Pate 3rd, series regular Jared Murphy in 4th, Dale Slides 5th, and Joshua Kunstbeck making his return to the series in 6th. Murphy would take the lead early with Kunstbeck and Slides side-by-side for 2nd. Slides would make the pass on the bottom but the two would switch lines and Kunstbeck would fight back on the bottom. The race would go three wide for the lead momentarily as Murphy would under heavy fire from Kunstbeck and Slides. In the end, Murphy would capture the win, Kunstbeck 2nd, and Slides in 3rd.
Last but not least was our 5th and final heat race of the night. Justin Byram would start on pole, Drew Alton would start 2nd, 3rd Thomas Levister, 4th league owner AJ Hunsinger, 5th Foxx Watson, and 6th Brad Wilson. Green flag out and rookie Justin Byram got real sideways as he stepped on the gas and caused a minor stackup. Hunsinger would exit turn 2 on the bottom below Alton for second place with Levister in toe. Hunsinger, wasn’t done yet and would take the lead and lead lap 1.
Heading into turn 1 on lap 2, Byram would push up the track up and over the cushion and fall to 4th place. Alton, still trailing Hunsinger but Alton was under attack from Levister. Hunsinger, stuck to the low line while Alton was running a slider line. Levister, also ran the bottom and would try to overtake P2 in heat race #5. The top 3 would all end up running the low line. Hunsinger won the race .52 seconds over Alton, Levister would finish 3rd, and Byram in 4th.
There would be a B-Main to be run but only 2 cars were able to make it to the grid and those two cars were Soloman and Ty Dickenson. These two drivers would use the B-Main as practice which really benefitted Ty Dickenson after his woes he had in his shortened heat race. Soloman would take the win in the B-Main.
The top 4 starters in the A-Main would all be series regulars. Tyler Bickford on pole, James Murphy outside pole, Hunsinger in 3rd and above him Jared Murphy in P4. Bickford would jump out to an early lead but a yellow flag would fly before the end of lap 1 as Jett Yantis and Justin Byram would make contact resulting in Yantis getting sideways and about coming to a stop. Thomas Levister would have nowhere to go and made significant contact with Yantis. In a chain reaction event, Fletchall, Solovan, and the #25 car would all be a part of the accident.
Green flag back out and Bickford again would jump out to an early lead over James Murphy. Hunsinger 3rd and Jared Murphy 4th with Kunstbeck in 5th. On lap 3, James Murphy began working the bottom under Bickford for the race lead. At the same time, Kunstbeck got into Hunsinger in turns 3 and 4 which momentarily sent Kunstbeck’s car hopping in the air up and over the yuke tire. Both cars would continue with no damage but Kunstbeck would fall back to the 7th position and Hunsinger back to 4th.
Further back, there was some great 2 and 3 wide racing between the Dickenson brothers, Alton, Madson, Fletchall, Soloman and several others. All of the rookies making their first appearance in the league seemed to be adapting to the setup of the League of Outlaws’ IMCA Style custom fixed setup very well.
Back up front, James Murphy was still trying to work his way around Bickford on the bottom. Murphy, would lead lap 10 just barely over Bickford but the battle would last a few laps yet as Bickford continued to battle on the outside. On lap 13, Bickford would try transitioning to the bottom behind new race leader James Murphy. When he did, Bickford kind of checked up causing he and Jared to stack up a bit. AJ Hunsinger, right behind the top 3 would slide into the stack up as well. Jared Murphy, was trying to get back down to the bottom right as Hunsinger was coming along and the two would make contact.
The contact would send the #33A ESD Performance machine of Hunsinger up in the air over top of Jared Murphy’s left front. Hunsinger was able to save the car from spinning but caused a huge lack of momentum off of turn two. Off of turn 2, Yantis and Taylor would pass Hunsinger. Approaching turn 3, the 7th, 8th, and 9th place cars were 3 wide behind Hunsinger and closing on Hunsinger quick. The 3 of them tried splitting Hunsinger but there was not enough room. Alton would make contact with Hunsinger, breaking the right front suspension on Alton’s car sending Alton straight up the track and hard into the outside retaining wall. Behind him, Soloman and some others would end up being involved as well.
11 laps to go after the restart and entering turn 1, Hunsinger was a victim once again of another stack up as Jared Murphy and Yantis got made contact and Hunsinger had to dodge them, causing Hunsinger to go up the track. Heading down the backstretch and into turn 3, Taylor made contact with Hunsinger sending Hunsinger up and over the cushion once more. Out of turn 4, Hunsinger just trying to hang on gets squeezed up into the wall ever so slightly down the front straight. Finallly, Hunsiger had a moment to breathe but now has fallen all the way back to the 8th position, losing 4 spots since the restart.
Up front with 8 to go, James Murphy has the lead, Bickford 2nd, Jared Murphy 3rd, Yantis 4th and Taylor rounding out the top 5 all single file. The first battle for position on the track would start near 5th place as Bryce Dickenson would try getting around Taylor. Behind them, Hunsinger was trying to split up the Dickenson brothers for 6th, 7th, and 8th as Hunsinger was looking to get back a couple of those spots he lost earlier and was able to take 7th place over Ty Dickenson for the time being.
There were now battles all over the track as behind them, a 4 car battle for the 9th position between Byram, Levister, Smith, and Fletchell. Up front, a battle for 2nd place began as Bickford, Jared Murphy, and Yantis were all right together running three different grooves as the higher lines were beginning to really show some speed.
Coming to the checkered flag, James Murphy would pick up the race win. 2nd place was a photo finish between Bickford on the top and Jared on the bottom but Bickford would be scored second. 4th place would go to Yantis, 5th Taylor, 6th Bryce Dickenson, 7th Ty Dickenson, Hunsinger would drop back to 8th, 9th would be Byram, and rounding out the top 10 was Thomas Levister.
